Typographic Notes: The Empowerment of Joy Division
The Brief
Find a genre, song, or musical movement that best represents a cause and use typography to bring it to life. Typography can express rhythm, culture, local aesthetics, traditions, humor, quirks, places, and people - in any language. Utilize these benefits to highlight a cause of the present using the music of an artist, genre, or festival that you feel is empowering (from any time period). Create a typography-first campaign with both physical and digital elements to inspire your audience to discover more about the issue(s) and, where relevant, spark a call to action.
The Concept
For this project I wanted to focus on the empowerment of the Post-Punk band Joy Division and how their music helped kickstart the new age of punk rock and became one of the first bands to make Manchester, England one of the biggest cities of culture and music. As well as celebrating Peter Saville’s iconic design work with the band. I challenged myself to create a design system that help promote the lyricism of Ian Curtis and how intertwined it was to the city of Manchester.
